UMass travels to Miche Stadium in upstate New York to battle Army. The Minutemen continue to struggle in all three phases of the game, particularly on defense. Army will present a new set of challenges today with their flexbone triple option offense. UMass has to stop the run first and foremost but they also have to find a way to not give up big plays.
Here are three keys to the game for the Minutemen.
1. Play assignment football: Army will pound the ball out of their flexbone triple option offense. UMass must be assignment sound and they cannot get caught out of position. If they do, they will give up a lot of big plays.
2. Possess the football on offense: The Minutemen must help their defense by playing keep away. UMass needs to show more patience on offense. They cannot continue to play fast, go three and out and expose their undermanned defense even more.
3. Hang in their: If UMass can keep it close for the first three quarters, they might have a shot at winning this game. Army has been a major disappointment this season. They should win today but if UMass can stay within a couple of score, they might actually have a shot. No, I am not kidding.
Final Score: Army 52 UMass 31: I expect a shootout in this one. Unfortunately, UMass’ defense is so bad that it won’t really matter. They will give up a lot of points and a lot of rushing yards.
