In only his second year at the helm, Bob Chesney has led Holy Cross to a Patriot League title and an FCS playoff birth.
The turnaround of this program under Chesney has been remarkable. It started with Chesney assembling an experienced staff. A staff that not only has strong local recruiting ties but national recruiting ties as well. Holy Cross is recruiting quality talent.
Chesney also brought an attitude to the Holy Cross football program. He has a positive, upbeat demeanor but his passion and energy is infectious. As a result, the players bought in from day one. The buy in has propelled the program to it’s first league title in ten years.
Holy Cross hired Chesney because of his track record as a program builder. Chesney rebuilt programs at Salve Regina and Assumption. He is a self made man. He works hard and he knows what it takes to succeed. That work ethic and attention to detail is evident when you watch Holy Cross play.
Naysayers will point to the Patriot League being down. Regardless of that, Holy Cross was the best team in the conference this season. They proved it by playing a tough non conference schedule that prepared them for league play.
The Crusaders open the playoffs with a trip to New Jersey to face a good Monmouth team. It is a tough opening round match up but Holy Cross is good enough to go on the road and win a playoff game. The Crusaders are battle tested.
Regardless of how this season ends for the Crusaders, it was a success. The program is heading in the right direction. The future is bright thanks to a committed group of players and coaches.
The Crusaders are back! Let us see where they go from here.
