Stone/@kstone06 Just because the state has robbed players and coaches of an opportunity to play high school football this fall, that doesn’t mean we can’t still focus on the wonderful programs around Massachusetts. Players, coaches, families and friends deserve to have their stories told and countless programs deserve to be highlighted, even if we can’t cover games on the field….

HIGH SCHOOL: Tough Adjustment On The First Friday Night Without Football

September 11, 2020

By Kevin J. Stone/@kstone06 I’ve never played the game of football, but man, it was hard not to wake up and feel the void left by silent stadiums on Friday night. Friday was supposed to kick off the first night of high school games in Massachusetts for the 2020 season. Agreeing or disagreeing whether or not kids should be playing right now is irrelevant. The fact of the matter is…

High School: The MIAA’s new high school sports calendar is far from fair

August 20, 2020

The MIAA Board of Directors voted yesterday to pass a proposed revamped schedule of high school sports in Massachusetts due to concerns over COVID-19. The new calendar is based on the recommendations the COVID Task Force, EEA and the governor’s office. As part of the plan, the fall sports season was divided into two seasons. Fall I (Soccer, Field Hockey, Cross Country, Golf, Swim and Dive and Volleyball) and Fall…

Photo courtesy of JOHN TLUMACKI/GLOBE STAFF By Kevin J. Stone/@kstone06 It’s been almost 20 years since Brian St. Pierre last put on pads for a football game in the state of Massachusetts, but his impact on the game locally is as important as it’s ever been.  The St. John’s Prep grad turned Boston College quarterback finished his SJP career in 1998 and was the Eagles’ quarterback through 2002. St. Pierre…

High School: There are a lot of questions surrounding the Fall 2 proposal. Here are mine

August 18, 2020

The MIAA Covid Task voted to send a list of recommendations to the MIAA Board of Directors yesterday. The recommendations called for a “Fall 2 Season” or a “Wedge Season” to be played between February 22nd to April 25th. Football, Cheer, Unified Basketball and any sport not played in the fall would be played during the second fall season. Field hockey, soccer, golf and cross country are to go on…

Boston College: Eagles’ coaches discuss the importance of high school football

August 14, 2020

Photo by Billie Weiss/Boston College There is an unfortunate belief that high school football will not happen this season here in Massachusetts. After new “guidelines” were put out on Thursday, and a tweet from WBZ’s Dan Roche regarding the upcoming season being in jeopardy, the doubt began to set in. While nothing is official, your immediate attention should turn to the players. Missing senior year is one thing, but for…

High School: Fall Sports pushed back to September 14th but football still faces an uphill climb

July 24, 2020

The MIAA announced on Tuesday that fall sports have been pushed back to September 14th. On the surface, you might think that’s good news but football and all fall sports are not quite out of the woods just yet. The fate of fall sports rests in the hands of Governor Charlie Baker and DESE. No decision will be made on fall sports until the governor and the department of education…

High School: What happens if there’s no high school football in Massachusetts?

July 12, 2020

By Kevin Stone/@kstone06  Two months ago if you asked me whether I thought there would be a high school football season or not in September I would’ve said absolutely. Pandemic and all, I’ve just always kind of thought that some things – school and high school sports being one of them – would be back to a new type of normal, but the bottom line is they would be back….

July 1, 2020

The MIAA’s Tournament Management Committee agreed on Monday to an eight division structure for high school football in Massachusetts. The committee also finalized plans to move to a new statewide playoff format in 2021. The committee also announced that the first two years of the state wide playoff format would entail of an eight game regular season meaning they did not take into consideration the proposal put forth by the…

High School: MHSFCA proposed plan is what is best for high school football long term

May 21, 2020

The MIAA held meetings last week with athletic directors and representatives from several sports including football. The primary focus of these meetings was the division structure in Massachusetts high school sports. Eight sports including football were required to go to five divisions starting in 2021. After meeting and discussing the five division concept, the football committee voted 14-0 in favor sticking with the eight division format. Former St. John’s Prep…
